This is a question our Aesthetician, Donna, is asked all the time. Her answer?
" Yes, Sun damage can absolutely be reversed!"
The topical Vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid) contained in EnPointe'sÉclairci C Serum is not only great at preventing further damage but it helps to lighten and brighten areas of the skin where sun damage has already occurred.
Another product that will help lighten sun damage is hydroquinone. This is a product I don’t like to see my patients on more than 6 months at a time because it can conflict with other products so is best to use with professional supervision.
Kojic acid is another skin lightener that is more natural and will help to lift sun damage within the skin. This is more “skin friendly” allowing the patient to remain on the product indefinitely as needed.
All of the products above are great for lightening the spots caused by sun damage, but to get quicker and better results, a good exfoliant is needed to remove the dead skin so these products may penetrate efficiently and also to further “lift” the discoloration from the skin with consistent removal of dead skin. Alpha hydroxy acids and retinoic acids work best bin conjunction with above skin lighteners and are great for overall skin clarity and health as well.
Professional Treatments
As far as professional treatments for sun damaged skin, there is my favorite and most popular procedure which is the Intense Pulsed Light. This device uses light energy to heat up and bring the damage to the surface which then leaves darker spots that in turn flake off with in 10 days to reveal even pigmented skin without the pigmentation. A microdermabrasion treatment is recommended around day 7-10 to remove any remaining pigmentation on the surface — and the results are nothing short of amazing!
I have had many patients go from severe sun damaged and pigmented skin that needs concealer and thick makeup to camouflage to even toned skin needing no makeup at all.
When it’s sun damage in the form of wrinkles, the above prodcuts, retinoic acid, Vitamin C, and alpha hydroxy acids all do an amazing job over time of resurfacing fine lines caused by elastin breakdown.
There are many laser treatments that currently help with sun damage as well. We treat our patients with a micro laser peel and/or profractional treatment which will resurface the skin and also help with collagen and elastic production. Again, the IPL treatment for sun spots is amazing at rebuilding collagen with the light energy, another reason for being a popular treatment that covers multiple conditions left from sun exposure. A series of 3 spaced 3 -4 weeks apart in conjunction with the above product will transform your skin a matter of months and is easily maintained with DAILY SUNSCREEN!
Sunscreen, every day
I recommend using a daily sunscreen with SPF 30. This is your number one weapon in preventing further skin damage including sun spots, fine lines, collagen and elastic breakdown, and more seriously, skin cancer.
Sunscreen, especially in higher altitudes is an absolute must on a daily basis. Even for those days that are over cast or people that work indoors and are exposed to UV rays for lights. And don’t think that your SPF 15 makeup is sufficient — you need at least SPF 30.
There are many effective remedies for sun damage with today’s technologies but to prevent further damage and maintain beautiful, healthy skin, sunscreen is one product NO ONE should be without.
